NEW YORK -Jerry Lieberman and his wife, Joan Lehman, often frequent Broadway shows, and that's how they found themselves at Radio City Music Hall for the Chinese New Year Splendor on Saturday afternoon.
Lieberman, an animation producer who lives in New York, said he enjoyed some of the more technical aspects of the program.
"The special effects were very good. I respect what they are doing with the music."
Lieberman said he had "no expectations" before going to the show, but said he was walking away from the Splendor with a stronger sense of cultural diversity.
"There is a difference between eastern and western culture," he said. "This production is very respectful of Chinese culture."
"We're avid theater goers," said Lehman, an artist. The couple attended the show with their daughter, Dana, and her friend, Erika.
After seeing so many Broadway shows, Lehman said the Splendor> was much more "subdued and quiet" than what she was accustomed to, and she liked that aspect.
"I thought it would be a little more of a circus. I respect what they're trying to do here."
Among the several solo performances, Lehman especially liked the erhu, or Chinese violin. The erhu is a two-stringed instrument known for its wide range of notes and haunting sound. She said she would like to learn more about Chinese instruments.
"I loved when the announcers were talking about the instruments, and I would love to see more of an explanation about the instruments during the show."
Dana and Erika said they liked what they saw. "We enjoyed it," said Dana. The Chinese New Year Splendor will conclude its run in New York on Saturday night, Feb. 9.
