NEW YORK -Registered nurse Jean Aiello was impressed by the performers' costumes at the Chinese New Year Splendor on Saturday afternoon.

"The dress and the manners are very different from Westerners. That's one thing you learn to appreciate," she said.

"It's just very, very beautiful. It is truly spectacular," she said.

She said her favorite performance was probably the "Nymphs of the Sea."

"And I liked the first one where the gods came down and made the first king, the first emperor," she said.

She liked the sound of the traditional Chinese erhu.

"It only had two strings but sounded like a bass violin," she said.

The movements and positions of the dancers' hands stood out for her, she said.

"These people are very talented -all artists. They spent years in order to do the craft they do," she said.

Her husband Andy Aiello is a service manager at a car dealership. He said he did not know a lot about Chinese culture.

"It's very intriguing; I'm very glad I came," he smiled.

"I like the story behind everything," he said.

He said they both enjoyed the drumming.

The Chinese New Year Splendor continues in New York through Saturday, Feb. 9.
