NEW YORK—Nearing the end of its 11-day New York engagement, the Divine Performing Arts Chinese New Year Splendor is the show du jour offering classical Chinese dance, music, stories and vocals.

Morris and Mary Jane Debar caught the show at Radio City Music Hall last night and shared their opinions.

“I enjoyed the music, I enjoyed the dancing. The costumes are fantastic,” said Morris, a retired music teacher, pianist, and band director from Long Island, N.Y.

“I’ve never seen such colors. I do some ballet, so it is interesting to watch a different kind of dancing,” chimed in Mary Jane, a retired college teacher.

Morris, a performing artist himself, was impressed with their unique stage formations. “There are so many performances [numbers in the show], and the costumes are rainbow colors. One of the things in it is how they portrayed the women culturally. The women are beautiful and are just something to behold. It’s not glamourous American ‘sexy.’ They are gorgeous. They are feminine. “

“I would have liked to hear a little more of the Chinese instrument, the erhu on the stage was expressive. It was very emotional.”

A ballet dancer, Mary Jo was fascinated at how the dancers moved and how they achieved a mysterious, ethereal quality. “When they dance, their head never moves, their body never moves, just their legs. They walk gracefully.”

The Chinese New Year Splendor continues in New York through Saturday, Feb. 9. For other shows in the Divine Performing Arts world tour, please visit: http://www.DivinePerformingArts.org/
