NEW YORK—"[This show is for] anyone who is interested in the world and other cultures, people with children and families—it's wonderful! I think to just about everybody, I'm going to recommend it for next year," said Sabina Shapiro, a city worker in Orange County, New York, "I loved it."

Sabrina had come to the February 8 showing at Radio City Music Hall with her husband, Norman Shapiro, a lawyer. Adding to his wife's words, Norman said, "It was beautiful, yes it was. I had heard that the music was beautiful as well as the costumes. It was more awesome than I expected. It was really great!"

Sabina had said that her favorite of the performances was one of a Chinese legend entitled "Lady of the Moon." The story told of a woman, Chang E, and her husband who had been granted the elixir of immortality. Sabina said, "I liked the story with the lady who went to the moon. It started and I thought 'oh no,' and then it just kept on going, and I really enjoyed the way they carried the scenes and the story along. It was very moving," she continued, explaining one of the characters in the performance, "The star-crossed lover type, he was doing what he needed to do, what was right; the right thing to do. So it was beautiful I thought, really enjoyable."

One common favorite of the show was the highly energetic men's drum dance of the Tang Dynasty. "I like drums," said Norman, "I was a hand drummer when I was younger, and I like that kind of thing."

The Chinese New Year Splendor continues in New York through Saturday, Feb. 9.
