New York -Sisters Tamara and Sara Greenfield were impressed by many aspects of the Chinese New Year Splendor when they attended the show on Thursday night. The Splendor has been playing an 11-show run at Radio City Music Hall.
"The erhu was gorgeous…it was crazy how good that was, right?" said Sara, an elementary school teacher. The erhu is a two-stringed Chinese instrument known for its wide range of notes and haunting sound.
Tamara, who has studied modern dance, is the executive director of Fourth Arts Block in lower Manhattan.
She said she "loved the drumming" as well as the live orchestra. "Or like when he was calling different instruments. It was nice to know ... you could recognize that sound but not necessarily know what that sound is - it's not like a trumpet."
Sara said the show was, "synchronized and symmetrical - male and female. Their art form is very different." She added that she's not used to seeing such a "giant production."
"There's still such a Chinese flavor to it. It's not like, say the Nutracker or something on stage. It looks very very different costume wise, the background, the setting, all that. I feel like it's a modern giant production."
Tamara said she did not know a lot about Chinese dance before seeing the show.
"I certainly don't know Chinese dance. I've seen Thai dance. I've seen dance with very specific hand movements. It was also interesting to see Korean dance versus Chinese dance. I think they're really beautiful.
And I think just because of my own pace, I tend to like things that are a little bit more pure dance more than the narrative pieces, less stories more movement, like the Nymphs of the Sea, that was beautiful."
Sara commented on the way the dancers moved. "The walk is really really different. I love the movement of the foot, the toe heel toe heel."
